A theory for predicting the dynamic behaviour of very large road systems is outlined. A new hierarchical representation integrates structures and dynamics at micro and macrolevels, and supports a new hierarchical shortest path algorithm. This makes holistic analysis practical for the dynamics of road systems in large areas such as cities, nations and continents.
