After a period of stagnation, research concerning traffic flow theory seems to make progress again. In a short introduction the stochastic characteristics of a traffic flow, speed and time-headway distributions are described and different measurement methods mentioned. Several new developments are outlined and both macroscopic and microscopic models of traffic flow included. Some examples of practical applications are improvement techniques for freeway surveillance or prediction of upcoming congestions.
