Abstract:

This paper examines the problem of estimating origin-destination trip matrices from traffic counts when congestion effects in networks are considered. A new formulation is given for the problem which solves the two sub-problems of entropy maximisation and equilibrium assignment simultaneously. This allows modelled link flows to be constrained to equal observed ones without using route choice proportions for the trips. A simultaneous solution method is presented for the new formulation. The performance of the new formulation and solution method is tested using a small artificial example.
