In this annual Blackett Lecture, a description is given of how the position of management in Britain has changed over the second half of the century; the qualities required for successful managers in the 1990s and beyond are identified; the ways in which managers might acquire these qualities, and the role of business schools, companies and the wider society in this process are discussed, and a few comments about the role of operational research in the future of management education are made.
