The performance matrix

There is considerable activity in academic circles in multi-criteria analysis and there are cases described in the literature of one-off exercises often to select from a number of options. In spite of this it is still comparatively rare to find a working example of the routine evaluation of multi-criteria into a single performance index. Such an example occurs in the Volvo works at Olofstrom where such an index yields comparative information for management, and even more inportantly, is used routinely on the shop floor to gauge and to encourage progress towards agreed performance targets.
