This paper describes an investigation into the effects of machine reliability and transported speeds, factors independent of the product-process relationship, on the performance of individual cells in a flexible manufacturing system. The effects of machine reliability and transporter speeds are investigated in relation to a specific case study environment which incorporates the characteristics of some organizations employing flexible manufacturing technologies.
