The purpose of this paper is to carry out the transient busy period analysis of a two-stage transfer line production system subject to inter-stage inspection and rework. After the first stage of production, the jobs undergo attribute type of inspection instantaneously and only good jobs are processed in the second stage while the rejects are reworked in a rework machine and processed further in the second stage. A stochastic model is developed to describe the production system and analytical expressions for the percentage utilization, idle time and blocked duration, with arbitrary distributions of processing times at both the stages of production and rework machines have been obtained by using stage-space method and regeneration point technique.
