Abstract:

During a game of darts, the aim of a player during the main part of the game is to maximise score. For professional players, this means aiming for the treble twenty. However, if a player's aiming skill is not as good as a professional's, then there may be other parts of the dartboard where the mean score will be higher over time. In this work, we first determine the probability distribution function for players of different skill levels and then determine the location on a dartboard that gives the highest mean score for a wide range of skill levels. We show that for certain categories of skill level, the optimal target location is in specific regions of the dartboard.
