This editorial article examines the place of incentive schemes within commercial organisations. The writer identifies five kinds of incentive (which may be mixed) and ten rules which have been framed by personnel managers as being desirable. These rules appear self-evident, but the article shows how each may lead to unfortunate consequences if they are applied rigidly: many of these consequences have been overlooked by designers of incentive schemes.
