This paper attempts to dispel the myth of academics being cosseted in metaphorical ivory towers by sharing our reflections on an intervention in which a core component of the teaching syllabus at Lincoln School of Management was put into practice in the ‘real world’. Specifically, the viable system model was shared with a voluntary sector group to assist with organisational design. Some lessons for interventions in general, are drawn out.
