This paper reviews the work of Eugene L. Lawler, one of the early investigators of combinatorial optimization and the architect of deterministic machine scheduling theory. After sketching his research career and examining the development of his interests, I describe some of his seminal results in scheduling theory and recall one of his contributions to scientific journalism.
