Measuring performance of similar units within an organisation has been considered by a variety of researchers from different backgrounds. Traditional measurements have exhibited considerable drawbacks resulting in the emergence of a number of newer techniques. One of these techniques, Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), was used by a building society to measure the efficiency of its branches. This article describes the application of DEA, the problems encountered and the lessons learnt.
