In earlier studies on checkpointing methods, which are effective for preventive maintenance of computer systems, system failures caused when checkpointing occurs have not been considered. However, in some practical cases, such system failures may occur at checkpoint times. In this paper, the authors propose the checkpointing model with a system failure caused by checkpointing and obtain the optimal checkpointing procedures. They apply the expected cost per cycle and the expected cost per unit time in the steady-state as criteria of optimality and discuss the optimal checkpointing time sequences minimizing these expected costs. Finally, the authors present numerical results of optimal checkpointing time sequences by assuming an exponential and a Weibull lifetime distributions. [In Japanese.]
