A quality improvement programme in the milling industry, consisting of a series of four related experiments is described. Central composite designs and a classical fractional factorial design were used in conjunction with the philosophy advocated by Taguchi. The plans and results of the experiments are given and the analysis discussed. The programme resulted in a substantial improvement in quality and considerable cost savings.
