Abstract:

The maximal covering and location set covering problems have recently been extended by the introduction of randomness into the availability of servers. These two models sited only one type of servers, for example, ambulances. In this paper, the authors utilize the notion of randomness in server availability in a system with two types of servers-the fire protection system. They show here how to site limited numbers of engine companies, truck companies and fire stations in such a way as to maximize the calls for service which have an engine company available within an engine covering distance with reliability α and a truck company available with the same reliability within a truck covering distance. Thus, coverage is achieved when both types of vehicles are each individually available with reliability α. A formulation is presented for this simple structure and computational experience is offered.
