The author was responsible for setting up an Operational Research OR group in a steelworks in 1962, and eight years later, set up a Health Service Operational Research OR group. This personal reflection on the processes involved in creating new and effective groups draws lessons about the practice of Operational Research OR in such different contexts, and the importance of both analytic and personal skills.
