The new social movements-environmentalism, feminism, pacifism, etc.-are not really new, but recurrent for at least two hundred years. They play an important role in the process of ongoing modernization, even if they intend to be antimodernistic. They push for the periodical readaptation of the industrial system to its natural and cultural context.
