An integer programming model for a problem arising in the construction industry is described. The problem concerns the optimal earthwork distribution in road construction satisfying real life constraints like project completion time and plant availability. The potential of the model is exemplified by applying it to a typical road construction problem originating from Sri Lanka. The work suggests that the model provides useful results for the planning and estimating of such projects.
