The paper shows that a scalarizing function widely used with the reference point method for multi-objective decision making, leads to inconsistent results when changes in the set of objectives are considered. The conditions under which such preference reversals can occur, are analyzed and their importance for practical application is evaluated. The paper also discusses possible extensions and generalizations of the problem identified.
