Abstract:

Let { A , B } equ1 be a definite matrix pair of order n equ2, and let the columns of X ˜ 1 C n × l equ3 span an l equ4‐dimensional approximate invariant eigenspace of { A , B } equ5. In this paper, we present a Hoffman–Wielandt‐type residual bound for eigenvalues between Rayleigh quotient matrix pair { X ˜ 1 H A X ˜ 1 , X ˜ 1 H B X ˜ 1 } equ6 and { A , B } equ7, which extends a result of Kahan [W. Kahan, Numerical Linear Algebra, Canadian Mathematical Bulletin, 9 (1966) 757–801].
