The optimal machining speeds to be utilized on the multiple stages of a flow-type automated manufacturing system were analysed so as to manufacture a product under three important criteria: the minimum production time, the minimum production cost and the maximum profit rate. Based on the analytical results, the optimizing algorithms were developed to determine the optimal machining speeds to be utilized on the multiple stages of the manufacturing system. A numerical example is given to show the effectiveness of the algorithm.
