The objective of a knowledge based decision support system (KBDSS) is to enhance the ability of decision makers to respond to opportunities/problems. The set of tasks for which the KBDSS can provide some assistance is called the domain of the KBDSS. The set of tools and rules which the KBDSS uses to help with those tasks is called the problem processing system (PPS) of the KBDSS. This paper presents a procedure for determining the optimal domain-PPS combination for a KBDSS. A specific application is provided to illustrate why the procedure is needed and how it works.
