Although knowledge-based systems have dramatically expanded computer efficiency, utility and range in business applications, growth in this sector is held back by barriers that are only now being overcome. This paper first makes a survey of expert systems contribution to the business field and discusses reasons for using such systems. It then highlights the limitations of this new technology and presents research avenues leading to a coming maturity of these systems.
