This article reports a study into the management of coronary heart disease within a health district. It is concerned with the appropriate balance of care between the District General hospital and community hospitals in the light of current changes in the clinical management of heart disease. The study is one example of the type of work undertaken by a small group established in the district to consider strategic management issues, with the aim of ensuring the best use of resources. The group includes the Acute Services General Manager, senior medical staff and external Operational Research OR analysts. Such a group provides a forum in which practical Operational Research OR studies can be conducted on long-term issues with the direct involvement of those responsible for the ultimate financing and implementation of any proposals made.
