This paper addresses the design of decentralized controllers for interconnected large-scale electric power systems. The system is modelled as a collection of independent subsystems or control areas interconnected through high voltage tie-lines. For each control area an independent model is derived using the information contained in the interface variables. Conditions are given for the existence of these local models. Decentralized controllers are designed to solve the ‘Load Frequency Control’ problem. The proposed decentralized control method is not limited to power systems. It is applicable to any interconnected large-scale dynamical system.
