A look at industrial Operational Research OR from ancient times (1945) to the present reveals many successes but enough failures to suggest that some of the wisdom from early Operational Research OR has to be relearned by each new generation. However, the complexity of today’s industry virtually requires Operational Research OR models. The challenge to contribute to industrial productivity will lead the field in new directions. One of these will be to empower front line workers in organizations with new tools that permit them to improve their own effectiveness.
