Expert systems for assisting the operation of complex manufacturing processes

This paper describes an expert system for aiding the operation of a complex manufacturing process. In many industrial processes, interventions (planned or not) must be handled effectively since they cause loss of production and quality. The basic idea behind this project was to provide the process operators with a powerful tool that increases their ability to manage both planned and unplanned situations. Since the problem is knowledge intensive, artificial intelligence techniques were successfully applied.
