This note introduces the papers that follow in this special issue of the Journal, devoted to modelling pension scheme assets and liabilities, and arising from a second IMA conference on the future of pensions schemes, held in March 2003. It outlines the key public policy issues that have developed or arisen since the first such conference in February 1998, and summarizes in context the five papers.
