The notion of communities of practice was first introduced more than ten years ago. It continues to attract attention within the knowledge management literature primarily because communities of practice provide an ideal context for knowledge to be created and shared. This paper is a reflection on the issues involved in setting up a community of practice at Holden College, an institute of higher education in Asia, among its instructional designers in June 2002. The paper identifies three salient lessons learned and offers five practical suggestions for interested managers to implement similar initiatives in their organisations.
