This paper addresses the issue of economically achieving the optimum quality level of purchased material. Uncontrolled chronic levels of quality costs associated with purchased material can significantly erode profitability. Purchased material is, therefore, an ideal target for increasing product quality while reducing costs. Philosophy, organization, and methods applied to minimize overall costs are presented. Simplicity is stressed throughout the paper.
