In most sports the champion is found by using a scoring system in which points reflect performance. What the points tariff ought to be is the subject of periodic debate, not least because people are interested to see old champions deposed and their own favourites elevated, if only retrospectively and informally. This paper illustrates the use of multiattribute modelling to infer a points tariff from the results of a small poll, compares it with the system in use and applies the results to the 1999 Formula I drivers championship.
