The present paper provides some modelling support to the message delivered by Professor Jean-Pierre Brans in his editorial paper of the present special issue. The stress is set on the importance of co-operation in order to achieve the ethical management of the future using Operational Research in the modern society. The importance of co-operative behaviour of stakeholders in the management of ‘Human Systems’ is confirmed by examples from natural systems and by results of simulation inspired from the prisoner's dilemma game.
