Abstract:

This paper starts from the assumption that the use of models is central to the methodology of operational research (OR). The concept is clarified by reference to its formal use in mathematical logic. A justification for the use of models in decision making is given. This is contrasted with the reasons why traditional Operational Research OR models are frequently not used by practising Operational Research OR workers (let alone managers). An attempt is made to resolve this contrast between the practice of Operational Research OR by academics with those closer to commercial decision making. The proper relationship between the two activities is suggested.
