Although they have come from very different cultural settings, there are great similarities between the ideas of Checkland (Soft-Systems) and Mao Tse-Tung (‘On practice’). The author shows how the methodologies are both learning system and useful ways of studying messy situations. However, there are differences, and these are also presented here.
