Abstract:

The object of this study was to estimate the probability for detecting a buried geological structure by means of a seismic line grid and, inversely, to calculate the dimension of a seismic line grid of minimum cost for the detection, with a given probability, of a hypothetical geological structure. The mathematical theory is based upon Buffon’s needle problem and on its extensions studied by Laplace, Uspensky and Diaconis.
