A paper by Onwubolu and Kumalo (2001) in this journal compared the effectiveness of genetic algorithms with several solution algorithms in solving machining condition optimization problems. By using the problem of Chen and Tsai (1996), they concluded that genetic algorithms significantly outperform simulated annealing. The present note points out that Onwubolu and Kumalo incorrectly handled the machining model. It also discusses the string representation of genetic algorithms used by Onwubolu and Kumalo and corrects some typographical errors. [See abstract 80621.]
