By investigating the correlation between facility states and process parameters and work-in-process (WIP) inventory, a model for optimizing inventory for work-in-process among serial operations is proposed. Its objective is to minimize WIP inventory on the shop floor while meeting the production constraints. At the same time, a kind of algorithm for WIP inventory control is introduced to control the WIP inventory between operations. The scheduling objective of the algorithm keeps the level of production to meet the demand and to keep the level of WIP inventory to the minimum level.
