The historical use of performance measures and the problems associated with productivity improvement in industry today are reviewed. A simple numerical example illustrates the problems arising when each functional area uses its own performance standard. A short case study highlights the problems of an actual company’s performance measurement system, and shortcomings associated with various traditional performance measures are described.
