This paper proposes an analytical framework, based upon goal programming, to incorporate an operational measure of habitat diversity into a forest management optimisation model. First of all, the trade-off curve between the proposed measure of habitat diversity and financial returns is determined. Then, the measure of habitat diversity is integrated in conjunction with other relevant criteria into a compact forest management model. The way in which both models work is explained with the help of a simple but illustrative case study.
