A major objective of the National Science Foundation (NSF) is to improve the nation's capacity for intellectual and economic growth. It does this by supporting the discovery of new knowledge and the enhancement of a skilled workforce. Both outcomes are supported by the different mechanisms of industry–university linkages available in NSF's GOALI initiative. By addressing long-term, generic research within an intellectual envelope shared by the industrial partner, the intellectual capital of academe and emerging technologies from industry are brought together in ways that increase the value to both partners. Industry can leverage its research investment, and university researchers can gain access to new technical challenges.
