Since mathematical programming’s inception in the early 1950s, practitioners have transformed theory into practice, produced an imposing array of technical advances on their own, and applied math programming effectively in countless settings in the public and private sectors. The next 10 years hold the promise of even greater technical development and expansion in the practice of math programming. Three topics bear on the outlook for the 1990s and beyond: the changing demographics of math programming practitioners, model building skills in the math programming community, and computing environments and resources.
