Abstract:

Earlier research has found that the variability in setup time can play a central role in which it produces paradoxes and can harm effective waiting time, work-in-progress (WIP), and capacity as one reduces setup time. Specifically, if setup time is reduced without a reduction in its variance, the waiting time in the system can increase and so can WIP. Of course, the matter worsens if setup variance increases as one reduces its duration. Given such findings, it becomes critical to find out what happens to setup time variance when we cut setup time. It is unlikely that setup variability can increase as one reduces setup duration.
