The notion ‘decision support’ rests on the assumption that those who have (faster) access to (better) information will operate more effectively in decision making processes. This assumption may be challenged. Three decades of experience with decision support systems (DSS) have taught us that the relationship between information and the quality of decision making is complex and elusive. Yet research into methods and tools for decision support cannot be evaluated without at least some rudimentary definition of decision making quality.
