High software costs have been a barrier to the wider use of simulation in British industry. A number of packages have been created with the explicit goal of providing on PCs something akin to the power of larger products, only at an affordable cost. The article describes how SIMUL8 was used to analyse vehicle congestion in an industry with rapidly perishable raw materials, and outlines some of its underlying concepts.
