Abstract:

The authors used a Cray supercomputer to model the spread of the fire which killed 31 people at a London underground (subway) station in 1987. The simulation model revealed, for the first time, that hot gas and flames would rise rapidly along a sloping trench without significant convection above the edges of the trench.
