In India, medium frequency induction melting furnaces find wide application in the making of steels by remelting of scraps. An operational problem of these furnaces is the need to repair and rebuild the lining of the crucible frequently. We present a methodical approach for better design and maintenance to decrease such problems. The erosion process of the lining is modelled as a renewal reward process. A related optimization problem is discussed.
