Knowledge-based systems in construction and civil engineering

An introduction to knowledge-based systems is presented, with an explanation of the concepts involved, and the motivation and criteria for their successful development. A state-of-the-art review of systems under development and in use in civil engineering and, in particular, the construction industry is then presented. The paper concludes by relating the experience of the author in assessing a knowledge-based software tool for project management.
