The usefulness of sophisticated modelling techniques is often reduced by the lack of accurate data. In such circumstances a quicker and more straightforward approach can still provide useful information for decision makers. This paper describes a simulation model used to compare different coconut replanting strategies. The strategies evaluated include choice of variety, pattern of planting, spacing, use of fertiliser and/or crop protection measures, and intercropping, as well as how gradual thinning and replanting at different rates compared with total elimination and what is referred to as strip replanting. Clear conclusions, some of which conflict with current practice, can be drawn from the results of the model.
