Abstract:

Reflecting on his long career in OR, the author draws on his experiences of advising very senior management and remarks that the special relationship required between decision maker and adviser contains the seeds of its own demise. It is concluded that top level Operational Research OR groups should be designed for limited life and that external consultancy may be more effective than an internal specialist group.
