Recent concerns for the nation’s environmental resources have rekindled interest in clean-burning alternative fuels. Current efforts toward environmental conservation have been directed toward trucking fleets because these fleets usually refuel at centralized locations. To assess interest and the future adoption of alternative fuels, a mail questionnaire was sent to 537 trucking firms. The questionnaire was designed to collect three types of information: perceptions of the most viable alternative fuel; attributes or characteristics of alternative fuels that would motivate a conversion decision; and expectations regarding legislative changes or future enforcement of current policies.
